SEO should be clean and simple, not over-the-top, because overdoing it can eventually land your site in the "search engine garbage bin" - as in . . . you'll be in "search engine time out" and excluded from the party or worse, in "search engine oblivion" and banned entirely! Search engine optimization takes skill and know-how. But, it's not rocket science! I have been a professional web designer for almost 10 years and I have learned by trial and error on hundreds of web sites what works and what doesn't AND what could land you in the "search engine garbage can." Believe me, you want to develop your web site the RIGHT WAY with "White Hat SEO" techniques - you want to be a "good guy" and do things the proper way.

It all starts with designing and developing your web site in the right way - that is key. Just like building a house - your web site needs an excellent foundation and that is done through good web development.
Secondly, there are specific techniques that you can employ in the code and meta tags in your web site.
Third but probably the most important is the WORDS you use on your site AND WHERE THEY ARE PLACED and HOW THEY ARE PLACED!
Believe it or not, paying for featured listings in search results is LAST on the list. These techniques can be great ways to SUPPLEMENT your traffic but your primary traffic should come from having a LEGITIMATE web site online with unique content and "Pure and Simple" SEO techniques built into your code. You want your web site to get ranked on the first page of search results AND more importantly, you want it to BELONG there.
Look at it from the Search Engine's point of view.
Search engines are in the business of providing a list of web sites that represent the search terms the customer has entered into the search box. Imagine if all the results that came back were web sites with little to no relevancy on the topic searched for or sites with low popularity. The search engine would quickly get a BAD REPUTATION and no one would use them. Search engines want to rank web sites the highest when they are the best web site for the search term. So, make your site the BEST for the search terms relevant to your product. Sure, you can get high search ranking for brief periods by using "high octane SEO strategies" but unless your site is actually relevant and useful, your high ranking won't last long.
